The Dorade was
designed in New York City by Sparkman & Stephens. At her launch
the Dorade scared people, too little freeboard, too small,
too much sail, too narrow, too fragile, and looked somewhat
truncated because she lacked bowsprit. In her first competition,
the Bermuda Race from Newport to Bermuda, Dorade finished
third overall and second in her class.

When the Stephens
brothers sold Dorade to a Californian in 1936, she had proved
a revolutionary boat. She had other owners, entered other
races and go on cruises. Gradually she disappeared from the
front of the stage, but not without teaching her successors
a thing or two.
The little Dorade
reappeared in a rally circuit for traditional boats at Porto
Cervo in Sardinia in 1997. The boat had come through a very
extensive restoration at the Italian Navy yard Argentario.
As soon as she
took up racing again, Dorade started winning regattas, just
as she had done in the beginning.
